Northwestern, Civitas scrimmage for practice
On Friday September 18, debaters from Northwestern High challenged the squad at Civitas to a scrimmage - debate style! Northwestern, a school returning to the League this year, has some new debaters, great coaches and a principal providing plenty of excitement and support to the squad. Civitas, returning the League for its second year, had new debaters and JV debaters (as well as some awesome coaches & unparalleled administrative support) that jumped at the opportunity to get some experience before the official season.
Sixteen students participated on Friday, and started out with some SpAr (spontaneous argumentation) exercises to get their feet wet, followed by workshops on argument construction and research and then debated after a pizza lunch. A brief awards ceremony closed out the day, with all participants receiving a certificate and some winning medals.
"Our students got so much out of the scrimmage," said Northwestern coach Sara Morrison. "They can't stop talking about debate!!!"
