New Debaters mix it up at first BUDL Tournament

Sun, 10/04/2009 - 10:15pm

Our first high school tournament of the year, hosted by Civitas/MATHS/KIPP, brought together top debaters from 21 different high schools.  This tournament represented the largest Junior Varsity division ever seen at a season opener in Baltimore.  Many of the students in JV were actually brave newcomers who decided to face off against tougher competition.  The tournament saw no less than 60 total newcomers!  A couple of schools achieved notable success, including City College, who had strong showings across the board, and Coppin, who locked up second place team in varsity, top novice speaker, second varsity speaker, and second place school overall.  Western, who fielded an squad composed almost entirely of newcomers, landed third place school overall.  With many teams in team building mode, the next tournament is anyone's game!
