BUDL's first-ever "Life Skills Day" a success
On Thursday, Oct. 15, the Baltimore Urban Debate League turned what would have been a day off from school for students into a successful "Life Skills Day," attended by 15 students from BUDL and Wide Angle Youth Media.
The first session of the day was Personal Visioning, in which students and staff alike talked about their goals and visions for themselves in the future. A number of students noted that no one had ever asked them some of the questions we did, like "what kind of person do you want to be," and "what kind of work style do you have." The conversation revolved around diversity, community activism and being unafraid.
The second session of the day was Financial Literacy, presented by our partner in financial education, Bank of America's Brooke Hodges. The final session, presented by personal trainer Michelle from the Maryland Athletic Clubs, was "Health and Wellness: Eating right and Staying active." The students learned about the importance of a good and balanced breakfast, and were treated to some yoga.
The day was a huge success and will be the first of many Life Skills Days presented by the Baltimore Urban Debate League. Future sessions will include creative writing, healthful grocery shopping, and others.
