CHIN — The debate audience keeps growing as the debate squads increase in size. The energized atmosphere at Chinquapin Middle School had all in attendance excited about what would take place as debaters paired off to argue the tournament topic: The Baltimore City Board of School Commissioners for Baltimore City Public Schools should establish a policy to improve the selection of food in school cafeterias. Parents, teachers, school administrators, politicians and other community stakeholders were present to watch the drama unfold as middle school students donned their critical thinking caps, made sure their pencils were sharpened and their pens were filled with ink, and their evidence cards were placed in cohesive rows.

Once again there was a “surprise round” and students found themselves debating whether or not rap music is a bad influence on young kids. Atlantis Whitley and Lavionne Culp took home the 1st place Varsity Team Award with Christopher Sterrette and Jaysmyn Piazza capturing the 1st place Novice Team Award. The high octane awards program also included the acknowledgment of parents and coaches and the passing of the Cardin Cup. This month’s Cardin Cup award went to the entire middle school debate squad at Frances Scott Key Middle, coached by Delina Scarboro. The team has displayed a litany of Michael Cardin-like characteristics including strong leadership qualities and sportsmanship.
