Homeless for a Night Debate 7

Part of a series of seven public debates as part of Carver's "Homeless for a Night" evening. The topic was "Resolved: that the government should sufficiently fund shelters in Baltimore for everyone who needs it." Coach Steve Sprouse and student government student Ronnie Pulley were affirmative, and BUDL manager Chris Baron and debater Ivory Okwar were Negative. The format was abreviated policy, with shorter speeches, constructives and rebuttals, and "open cross examination" in which opponents and audience members questioned constructive speakers. More than 30 students, debaters, parents, family members, coaches and teachers were involved. It was a high energy debate over wether the government could afford housing, whether there is a moral obligation, and whether the government or private sector is best configured to deal with homelessness. The Carver team raised more than $500 to help the Code Blue shelter, not including canned goods, blankets, and other donations.
