BUDL Policy on Outside Participants
With the exception of, BUDL tournaments are only open to students and teachers from BUDL member schools, with the following exceptions:
- any team may from a non-member school may compete in the Varsity division (see below)
- joint events sanctioned by BUDL administration
- teams from other urban debate leagues
- emerging debate programs (see below)
BUDL's policy on cultivating emerging debate programs:
- Students and teachers who are members of emerging debate programs may compete in BUDL tournaments by registering in advance and paying a $25 per team entry fee (this covers lunch and hosting costs).
- Emerging debate programs will be defined by schools that have either: all staff new to debate or have not had a debate team for more than 3 years.
- These schools must cover their judging obligations (1judge for each 2 teams).
- Outside schools may compete only if the tournament can support additional teams.
- Emerging debate teams may compete in JV or Varsity divisions, but may not compete in the Novice division.
BUDL's policy on non-member school competition:
- BUDL novice and JV divisions are only open to students and teachers from BUDL member schools (exception: emerging debate programs above).
- In the varsity division, students from programs outside the BUDL may compete by registering in advance and paying a $25 per team entry fee (this covers lunch and hosting costs).
- These schools must cover their judging obligations (1judge for each 2 teams).
- Outside schools may compete only if the tournament can support additional teams.
